The Great Wave off Kanagawa is one of the most iconic pieces of woodblock printing made by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849). Ukiyo-e, which originated as a Buddhist term, means "floating world" and refers to the impermanence of the world.
This porcelain Japanese teacup illustrates the great wave with Mount Fuji in the background. The huge wave threatens to engulf two ships off the coast of Kanagawa prefecture (directly south of Tokyo).
