Tokoname ware has a long history and tradition which dates back 900 years. This Yokode Kyusu (Teapot with a side handle) is formed together with Tokoname clay that is rich in iron which Tokoname is famous for. The iron in the vermillion clay is believed to harmonise with tannin in tea to enhance the flavour when steeped.
Key Features
This Japanese kyusu teapot is fired at high temperature without glaze which is quite rare. This teapot has an in-built ceramic strainer at the opening of the spout inside the teapot. The clever design will prevent the steeped tea leaves from entering the teacup. The iron-rich clay of Tokoname-ware is said to remove the tannins of tea making your tea taste smoother and more enjoyable.
The special feature of Tokoname yaki is the red clay (Shudei). Clay is mixed with iron oxide without the use of glaze.
This iron results in the red colour distinct to Tokoname yaki. This Yokode Kyusu (Teapot with a side handle) has an exterior that is glazed and unglazed. Inside the Kyusu is an in-built stainless steel fine mesh strainer to ensure the full flavours of the tea leaves are passed through the spout. Internally the ISSEN Kyusu is unglazed allowing the infusion of the tea and infamous TOKONAME clay to brew delicious tea.
