While the majority of canister manufacturers no longer produce their products by hand, Kotodo has maintained its traditional manufacturing process that cannot be replicated in mass production.

Ever since the Kotodo company was founded in 1910, they have been crafting canisters with the single goal of providing products that delight customers. Each process has been mastered by generations of craftsmen that continue to be the foundation of the Kotodo company today.

Air Tight, Moisture resistant

Air tight and moisture resistant, our tea canisters are perfect not only for use as tea containers, but also as kitchen storage for flour, pasta, grains, nuts and other preservable foods.

Light Resistant

Kotodo Canisters are perfect for storing light-sensitive items and materials. The tea canister's lid is deep and overlaps with the body, enhancing air tightness.

100% recyclable

Our canisters are made using food-grade tin, and are 100% recyclable. The recycling rate for steel cans in 2017 was 93.4% in Japan. This is a very high recycling rate!

Master Craftsmanship

Kotodo japanese tea canister manufacturer

The process begins with cutting out the tin material from a large board. The board is cut into 20 different sizes to accommodate our various tea canisters.

After the tin material is hand-cut, it is then rolled into a cylindrical shape with a special machine. Because this procedure is also carried out by hand, Kotodo tea canisters cannot be made in large quantities.

Once the canisters are in a cylindrical shape, they are put into a special mold to define the area that the top lid will sit on. This process is carried out by inserting a rubber balloon into each cylinder and expanding it to ensure that each canister is evenly formed.

Handmade to Perfection

Wrapped in Smooth Washi Paper

The finished edges of the lid and body are flush with each other. Having an even surface all around minimises friction, thus prolonging the life of the Washi paper.

Outer Lid Clicks into Place

Twist the lid counterclockwise until an audible "Click" is heard. The patterns on the lid and the body will be in perfect alignme

Airtight Inner Lid

The inner lid is made of high-grade tin with a gold colour finish. It protects the contents inside from light exposure, humidity and air.

Cut Edges are Bevelled Inward

With user safety in mind, we take the extra precaution of beveling the cut edges of the lid and body inwards unlike most other handmade manufacturers. As an precaution, the edges of our tin-cans are rolled slightly inwards to prevent our users from injuring their fingers.
