So I recently came across this remarkable TEDx talk presented by Dr Terry Wahls who effectively reversed her secondary progressive MS using the power of food. Amazing right? Hard to believe? YES!
But after watching her TEDx talk and scrolling through the 2,500 or so comments where other sufferers said that they too had adopted the diet and felt a marked improvement in the symptoms just reminded me how little we actually know about the true power of good nutrient rich food.

Terry Wahls MD was diagnosed with a crippling case of Multiple Sclerosis, and even after 7 years of the best treatment modern medicine had to offer, her condition continued to worsen.
She had to be in reclining wheelchair and she had to sit in a zero gravity chair because she was unable to hold up her own torso. She made a decision to change her life, and take her health into her own hands.
She began to research how nutrition could be used to rebuild her nervous system using large quantities of extremely nutrient dense foods and removing foods that create inflammation.

In this ovarian cancer study, patients with ovarian cancer and drank green tea, their survival rates were much high than those who did not drink green tea.

A study conducted on mice reveals that mice which were fed water enriched green tea were less susceptible to developing collagen-induced arthritis compared to the mice which were not fed green tea polyphenols.
]]>Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes pain and swelling in the joints. I’m not a sufferer myself, however, the disease runs in my family and my father is someone that lives with it every day.
Currently, there is no cure for RA. Treatment for this disease is based on reducing the inflammation to slow the progression of the disease. In my father’s own search for Rheumatoid arthritis natural remedies and pain relief, he came across an interesting medical study conducted on mice that were fed green tea.
The study, led by Dr. Tariq Haqqi of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, used mice to study the effect of polyphenols in rheumatoid arthritis. Polyphenols are powerful antioxidants found in matcha green tea.
The mice in the study were given either plain water or water enriched with green tea. The dosages given were comparable to human consumption of four cups of green tea per day. All the mice were then injected with collagen for the purpose of inducing arthritis. Collagen-induced arthritis is considered very similar to human rheumatoid arthritis.
The study results concluded that mice which were fed the green tea polyphenols were significantly less susceptible to developing collagen-induced arthritis than the mice not fed green tea polyphenols. Of the mice fed green tea that did develop arthritis, it occurred as late onset and mild. Only 8 out of 18 mice receiving green tea polyphenols developed arthritis, while 17 out of 18 mice not receiving green tea polyphenols developed arthritis
Examination of joint tissue microscopically revealed marginal infiltration of joint cells in mice receiving the green tea in contrast with massive infiltration in the mice not fed green tea. The effect of the green tea appeared dramatic.
In many countries such as India, China, and Japan, green tea is regarded as healthful with the potential to prevent certain illnesses. Seemingly, rheumatoid arthritis in these countries exists at a much lower rate than elsewhere around the world and some people believe strongly in the effect of green tea.
EGCG (epigallocatechin 3-gallate) is the polyphenol in green tea which is considered to be the active ingredient. According to a report in Arthritis Research & Therapy (2010), EGCG constitutes up to 63% of total catechins. In terms of antioxidant activity, EGCG is 25 to 100% more potent than vitamin C or vitamin E. One cup of green tea provides 60 to 125 mg catechins (including EGCG).
My father is now a daily drinker of Matcha green tea. Unlike ordinary green tea, 1 cup of matcha is equal to the nutritional content of 10 cups of regular brewed green tea. Matcha is a great supplement to add to your diet and the health benefits have been proven time and time again.
Matcha is not a cure for arthritis by any means, however, studies have proven that it is an excellent preventative measure to include a few cups of green tea to your daily diet. It certainly won’t hurt and at the very least will help keep your immune system fighting strong.

Coffee has been around since the 15th century and some would say that we're living in what can only be described as a coffee renaissance. Coffee uptake in Australia has risen dramatically over the last few years and this can be attributed to a boom in local cafes roasting their own beans and brewing some of the finest roasts that you can get anywhere in the world.
Matcha, on the other hand, has only just started to make its emergence in the western world. Well, in fact, Matcha traces back to the 11th century and has been seen in the hands of legendary Buddhist monks, celebrities, athletes and of course the list goes on.

The caffeine level in Matcha is far less when compared to coffee. Matcha powder green tea has about 70mg of caffeine compared to an espresso shot with about 150mg of caffeine. Drinking 2-3 cups of coffee per day increases the insulin and adrenaline glucose levels in your body. The result is a higher heart rate which could make you feel anxious, jittery and nervous.
What Matcha lacks in caffeine, it makes up with things like L-Theanine amino acid that produces a calming effect in the body and allows the alertness levels caused by caffeine to keep you focused for longer.

Antioxidants are “cleaners” and oxidise free radicals in the body to form harmless substances that can then be flushed out of the bloodstream and body, naturally. Scientists are starting to discover what the Zen Buddhist monks have known for centuries. A recent study presented by the British Heart Foundation have discovered that a compound found in green tea, currently being studied for its ability to reduce amyloid plaques in the brain in Alzheimer's disease, also breaks up and dissolves potentially dangerous protein plaques found in the blood vessels.
Green tea could hold the key to preventing deaths from heart attacks and strokes caused by atherosclerosis, according to research funded by the British Heart Foundation and published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
Atherosclerosis is the build-up of fatty material inside our arteries that can reduce the flow of blood to the heart and brain. In advanced stages of the condition, a protein called apolipoprotein A-1 (apoA-1) can form amyloid deposits, which are similar in structure to those associated with Alzheimer's disease.
These deposits build up within atherosclerotic plaques. Here, they increase the size of the plaques, further restricting blood flow, and may also make the plaques less stable, increasing the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
Researchers found that epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), most commonly associated with green tea, binds to the amyloid fibres of apoA-1. This converts the fibres to smaller soluble molecules that are less likely to be damaging to blood vessels.
David Middleton, Professor in Chemistry at Lancaster University, said:
The health benefits of green tea have been widely promoted and it has been known for some time that EGCG can alter the structures of amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Our results show that this intriguing compound might also be effective against the types of plaques which can cause heart attacks and strokes.
But to get the most health benefits out of any green tea, you need to ensure that your sourcing the best kind.
